Nōrin Robotics was founded in Boston, USA in 1997 under the name Open Thoughts Research ("OTR") with the goal of developing easily producible technology for communities in developing countries who can then build and sell locally. In 2002, OTR established its first Japanese office and soon thereafter assembled and led a consortium to develop an autonomous sewer inspection robot. Funding for this project, roughly ¥300,000,000, was competitively funded, of which OTR successfully won over numerous competitors. Since then, OTR has provided automation and robotics consulting in areas such as vision, motion control, electronics miniaturization, and automation for customers.
Since his time as engineering physics student at the university, Norin Robotics’ owner has worked on various aspects of alternative energy. His physics research topic was the design of a solar-powered co-generation/desalinization plant and, as part of his professional career, he has done consulting work on biomass (sawmill-waste) co-generation and landfill gas-energy plants, and control electronics for a nuclear power plant. Recently, by using a novel method of collecting biomass waste accumulated from automated harvesting, we are finally able to combine alternative energy with our core strengths—robotics within the primary industries. As such, we have updated our name to so that our business content can be recognizable from the name—Nōrin is a Japanese portmanteau of “nōgyō” (agriculture) and “ringyō” (forestry). We chose to use these primary industries in our name as we believe our contribution to these two industries will make the greatest positive impact on mankind.
